Each meeting of the Payson Rimstones Rock Club includes a presentation or demonstration related to our mutual interest in rocks and minerals. Later members share rock-related items that they have brought just because they are unique, or so they can find out what experts in the group know about their find. Members and supporters donate other items to the raffle and silent auction tables. Winners get to choose their favorites from the table and the proceeds go toward providing scholarships to deserving college-bound students.
Our club is fortunate to be able to draw on a wide variety of experts in fields related to geologic and earth sciences. Our active membership includes retired geologists, engineers, Forest Service managers and a paleontologist, among others!
In 2019 alone, our experts educated and entertained club members with videos and slide shows about the Geology of Gila County, the Grand Canyon, Arizona’s green rocks, Rim Country fossils, rock cleaning, oil fracking, cabochons, and Michigan rock collection, to name just a few!
Many thanks to John Pearson for his fascinating demonstration of flint knapping in November! Our club audience of all ages were spellbound, and got to take home souvenir flint pieces that John knapped to a smooth, harmless edge before our very eyes.
Incoming Board member, Joyce Hendrix, intends to add new demonstrations to the line-up of monthly presenters in 2020.
